Green Grilling

Cal Flame BBQ IslandAs our society becomes more environmentally aware, consumers are constantly looking for ways to be more efficient in their everyday life and less harmful to the environment.

Below are some helpful “green” grilling tips from Cal Flame so you can grill your favorite meals without harming the environment.

Gas vs. Charcoal

  • Although it doesn’t offer the same flavor as charcoal, the cleanest, most energy-efficient grilling option is gas grills (natural gas or propane), with electric grills coming in a distant second.
  • The demand for natural gas and electric products certainly has environmental impacts, (offshore drilling, hydro-electric dams and coal-fired power plants), but these two options still offer the cleanest, most energy-efficient way to burn fuel.
  • Wood and charcoal burners pollute the air with tiny particles of soot that can contribute to chronic lung and heart problems.

Use Organic Meats & Produce

  • Look for free-range meats that have been grass-fed or produced using certified organic feed.

Use Eco-Friendly Briquettes

  • Briquettes or lump charcoal are NOT completely earth-friendly because burning either of them can cause pollution.
  • Producing wood-based lump charcoal can contribute to global warming and/or deforestation.

Dispose of Ashes Properly

  • Wood ash is alkaline. It can be used in the garden as a fertilizer, but only if you’re trying to neutralize very acidic soil so apply it with care.
  • Charcoal ash contains chemical residues which are harmful to plants and should be disposed of in the garbage.

Light Your Fire without Fluid

  • Chimney starters and electric probes are good alternatives to lighter fluids, which emit harmful
  • ·VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) when lit. They are inexpensive (usually $12-$15) and provide a fast, reusable, pollution-free alternative for lighting up the grill.

It’s never too late to improve one’s physical, mental and social well-being through new ways of exercise and relaxation. A hot tub will benefit adults over the age of 50 by providing the following specific benefits from hot tubbing:

Reduced Stress – Soaking in a hot tub 3-4 times a week is an efficient way to reduce stress which we all know can be detrimental to your health. The intense hydrotherapy a hot tub provides will 1.) massage muscles, soothing away aches 2.) warm water will increase circulation and increase flexibility in your joints 3.) buoyancy helps the mind relax.

Did You Know You Can Design Your Own Spa Cover?

cover-banner

After proper sanitization and water balance, your spa cover itself is the single most critical piece of equipment to keep your hot tub water clean, and to keep your energy bill at a reasonable level. Saving money on heating costs means properly insulating your tub, and that is what good insulating spa covers achieve. Heat rises, and just like in your home, most heat loss in a hot tub goes directly up. By sitting just above the steaming water, a well-made hot tub cover provides proper insulation to help trap the heat inside

Design your new hot tub cover in four easy steps:

1)      Choose your insulation thickness.

Options include our basic Thermo-Shield cover, our standard Thermo-Shield cover, and our Deluxe Thermo-Shield cover.

2)      Select the shape of your spa.

3)      Select your fabric color choice.

We have ten options for you to choose from!

4)      Enter your cover measurements.

It’s that easy! For more information, click here.

Our spa pumps last years longer than competitor brands. Each switchless pump has a 50% thicker and longer shaft than standard pumps for increased durability and output. Shop for the perfect spa pump for your hot tub that will not only deliver an intense hydromassage, but will keep your spa water circulating for a clean and warm water spa experience.

Hot Tub Maintenance

Hot tub maintenance can be made simple by cutting it down to a 3-step system:

  • Balancing
  • Sanitizing
  • Shocking

Balancing spa water means that the water is neither too alkaline (high pH) which causes destructive scale buildup on equipment, nor too acidic (low pH) which may erode plumbing and cause costly damage to spa pumps, seals and heaters. Balanced water has a more pleasant feel to the skin, and allows your sanitizer to work more effectively. Spa water can be tested by using test strips to check alkalinity on a weekly, or bi-weekly basis. Santa Barbara 22

Water sanitation is arguably the most important out of the 3-step system. Preventing additive chemicals can be made easy by implementing an ozone or salt water system to your hot tub. Not only will a sanitation system ensure that your spa water is always ready to be enjoyed, but it can also reduce the amount of chemicals used to balance or shock spa water. If you do not have a sanitation system, it’s not too late!

The most important thing to do in preparation for shocking the spa water is to first test the spa, and adjust the pH to the range of 7.2-7.6. Oxidizers work best in a low pH environment, and the efficacy of your spa shock is twice as great at a pH of 7.6, than it is at a pH of 8.0. When shocking the spa, be cautious when using spa shock, oxidizers can be dangerous when misused or mishandled. Different oxidizers have varying strengths – be careful not to overdose your spa shock treatment. High winds can blow spa shock right in your face. Gently pour it over the surface, and clean up any spills right away.

Another way to effectively maintain your hot tub clear of the elements is by implementing a diligent and form fitting spa cover. Find the perfect fitting spa cover for any hot tub brand at www.QuickSpaParts.com and limit the amount of hot tub maintenance you need to perform on your hot tub.calspasblogwinterbanner.jpg

Using A Hot Tub Spa Outside In The Winter

More and more people are using their hot tubs outside throughout the winter months. Although the wintertime is the most pleasurable season to use an outdoor hot tub, there are certain precautions you must take to ensure the proper operation and energy efficiency of your unit.

Setting your controls: If your spa has an Auto Heat or Freeze Protect system, make sure that it is activated as soon as the temperatures start to drop at night. Many spas have a Timer – Auto Heat button on their control boxes. Flip the button to the Auto Heat mode. This will ensure that the water in the spa and the jet piping doesn’t freeze.Cover-Girl-1024x638

If your spa has a Topside Thermostat Control, make sure that it is set past the Freeze section, well into the Heat or High portion of the dial.

If your spa does not have an Auto Heat or Freeze Protect mode, but it does have a timer system, you’ll want to reset the time to give you the best possible protection against freezing. If you have an Infinite Cycle Timer, it is a good idea to set it to come on for 15 minutes every hour.

This will ensure good hot water circulation through the pipes as well as keep the water nice and hot. If you have a timer that is set with brass and silver colored pins, it is a good idea to purchase additional pins so that you can set it to go on 15 – 30 minutes every two hours.

Hot Tubs and Home Value

How Does a Hot Tub Affect Your Home Value?S-525L Sml Environment

There’s no single rule for calculating how much installing a hot tub will increase the value of a given home – if it does at all. Some hot tubs may, depending on various factors.

  • Is it a portable hot tub? So-called “portable” hot tubs are, as a rule, considered personal property and as such offer no added value to the house and land. And what is a portable hot tub? Any hot tub displayed on a showroom floor is a portable hot tub. It can be moved and relocated even if it is heavy and requires special equipment to deliver it to your home. Contrast portable hot tubs with permanent hot tubs: A permanent hot tub sits in the ground, much like an in-ground swimming pool. The plumbing is typically built-in as well. An in-ground hot tub may increase your home value, although generally not as much as you invested in the tub.
  • Is the hot tub built-in? Even a “portable” hot tub may add real value to your home if it’s built-in. If removing the tub will cause extra construction to close or cover the hole in the deck, patio, wall or such, then it is considered built-in and may increase the home appraisal. Even then, the exact amount may vary.
  • Where do you live? The climate you live in also influences the affect a hot tub may have on property value. In northern climates, for instance, outdoor swimming pools don’t always get much use. It’s simply too cold most of the year. A hot tub, on the other hand, is a pleasant retreat in the coldest of winters – even if it is outdoors.

Residents of hot, southern climates probably won’t appreciate a hot tub in the same way. In such markets swimming pools will likely raise your home value more than a hot tub.Z628T Environment

How to Increase the Value of Your Hot Tub

When it’s time to sell your home, of course you want it to look as nice as possible. Spruce up your hot tub to make it more appealing to potential homebuyers:

  • Replace old or damaged hot tub covers. Simply changing the cover can make a hot tub look more inviting.
  • Clean the tub thoroughly. Depending on the material, wash and shine the exterior. Wipe down the interior to remove algae, stains or other problems, and chemically treat the water or even change the water if necessary. Remove any debris in and on the hot tub before any home viewings.
  • Landscape around outdoor hot tubs. Present your spa area as a tempting retreat from the surrounding world. Build a fence to shelter it from neighbors, install mood lighting, plant greenery, make a brick or concrete path leading to the tub – anything that will help blend the tub into the home environment and increase appeal.

If you’re struggling with the thought of spending the money on a hot tub, ask yourself how long you plan to remain in your home. If you can’t foresee selling and moving for a number of years, the actual financial return may be secondary to your enjoyment in the meantime.
